In 2001, Malaysian Muslim men were granted the right to end a marriage with a text as long as the message were clear and unambiguous. Not surprisingly, reactions to the messages and the concept itself in Malaysia have been less clear cut. Shar’ia law permits a Malaysian man to divorce in writing, but the government had to backpedal in 2003 and discourage the use of SMS to terminate a Muslim marriage, following a public outcry.
