Sepet is a love story that goes where few Malaysian films have dared to go. It sensitively tackles the delicate issue of Chinese immigration into Malaysia and the cultural overlaps and conflicts for those who choose to start a new life in this multi-layered Muslim society. The film is the first of a trilogy and depicts the blossoming love between a Chinese DVD seller and a middle class Malay girl. Not surprising, their chosen path is littered with obstacles, and confronts the ongoing existential struggle between two young lovers entwined in the roots of two very distinct cultures. Sepet deals lovingly and openly with love and multiculturalism in modern Malaysia and like its protagonists, it is bold, moving and unafraid.
