Azerbaijan lies at the crossroads between Europe and Asia, and was one of the first countries to embrace Islam when the Muslims arrived to it in the 7th century. When the Soviet Union annexed the country in 1920, many Azerbaijani Muslims found it impossible to devote themselves to the faith. Muslim leaders were exiled, or worse killed and Mosques closed or destroyed. Since Azerbaijan regained independence in 1991, many of the country’s Muslims, particularly the younger generation, are embracing a revival of their faith and freedom.
