Iranian internet dating really took off a few years ago, and despite what you might expect, cyber liaisoning is a popular pastime for young people from all over this Islamic Republic, including some of the more conservative areas. Dating with any kind of visibility before marriage is strictly controlled in Iran, and the internet is proving a more discrete way for young, open-minded Iranians to meet new friends on the same wavelength and chat, mingle and explore, and who knows... maybe more.

Dating may not be something you see every day in Iran, but it is happening. There are three commonly practiced forms of dating for many young Iranians: 1) Don’t do it, forget about it and wait till you’re married; 2) Do it but disguise it – in a manner of ways; 3) Get a temporary marriage. The latter is proving highly popular for young Iranians in this traditional country who want to express themselves freely and enjoy a little romance, or whatever. A stroke of genius? A comparatively hassle-free “oasis” between dating and long term marriage - is this kind temporary legal union another word for dating in Iran these days...?

Internet dating in Iran is a delicate subject. So delicate that in December 2008, a popular Internet dating website that claimed to help Iranians find a marriage partner and settle down to start a family, was banned for online posting of clients’ pictures and email addresses. Given Iran’s strict stance on Internet filtering are Iranians finding love and friendship along the digital highway? And if so…how?
