A religious group that seeks to improve conditions for Black Americans and promotes the belief that Allah will bring universal peace, the NOI has attracted admiration and controversy since the 1930’s. As the world scratches its head and tries to make sense of the demise of the self-professed “King of Pop”, rumours about the surreal, glorious and tragic life of this mythological musician abound like mosquitos. In November 2008, just seven months before his death, Michael Jackson became a Muslim. He joined his brother Jermaine, and a golden list of highly influential black Americans like Malcolm X and Muhammad Ali in choosing Islam as the path to enlightenment and salvation. What compelled him to do this, and what difference did it make?
