The words “matchmaker” and “Mullah” might not be a million miles apart in the dictionary, but they’re worlds away in Tehran, where love affairs are generally conducted with ultimate discretion, and advisers counsel on the virtues of arranged marriage. Jafar Ardabili is bringing the two polarities closer together, and with it thousands of couples within and around Tehran. He and his wife run the Amin International Family and Cultural Institute, a sort of supervised matchmaking agency for singles who seek their significant other within the confines of Tehran’s social norms. Neither legal nor illegal, Ardabili’s loving enterprise is in the grey area and beneath the blind eye turned by the Tehran authorities. What’s more, when it comes to love united, its track record is one of overwhelming success.
