Valentine’s Day 2009: A Beirut bar buzzes as couple carry out fake marriage ceremonies while the crowd watch on and toast them. Why? Because it’s a peaceful way of protesting against Lebanon’s civil marriage laws, or rather lack thereof, Inter-marriage is not permitted in the Lebanon, so lovebirds that cross the line also have to cross the border and marry elsewhere. Just prior to the Valentine’s Day affair, a reform was passed making it no longer mandatory for Lebanese citizens to declare their religion on their ID cards. Was this the tentative first step towards more reforms and perhaps the yearned for civil-marriage reform or a far cry from a long-term commitment?
