Love is often poetic. Love is often tragic. Love is sometimes unrequited. If you were Somali poet Elmi Bodheri, it was all those things and more. This baker turned sonnet sayer in the strict society of British Somalia of the ‘30s and ‘40s fell head over heels in a love with a woman named Hodhan, whom he met over the counter and was inspired to utter and write beautiful love poetry to her from that day forth until his death of a broken heart. The couple never met again, and yet the power of Bodheri’s instant love for a woman 21 years his junior has become legendary among Somali romantics from that day to this.
