It takes guts to make a film like Veiled Love. This controversial Moroccan movie has landed its director, Aziz Salamy in rather a lot of hot water for its depiction of the leading couple kissing and embracing. Veiled Love isn’t the first on-screen North-African love story to include scenes some Muslims might find distasteful or even downright disrespectful. But this time round, the bee in the collective critics’ bonnet is the fact that the female protagonist wears a hijab. Like it or loathe it, the movie has raised interesting debate about love, Islam and the topically tempestuous issue of the veil.
