Living On the Edge
I’ve been following the BBC’s British Muslim Reporter Adil Ray for a while as he digs around in Turkey for the Show “Turkey on The Edge” in order to reflect on the diverse nature of the country. He covers the whole spectrum of opinion from a pro-alcohol protest in Istanbul to the great hijab debate.
Adil’s an adventurous sort, which is reflected in his acceptance of an invitation to appear on popular Turkish dating show, Su Gibi. The show is a spicy, tongue in cheek take on “blind date” with a unique Turkish twist – but what’s particularly fascinating about it is its audience. Traditional Muslims sit side by side with more liberal counterparts to egg the contestants on or “tut-tut” in disproval at prospective dating partners.

Live, Love… and Laugh out Loud
Live and direct, Adil’s bid for love is beamed across Turkish airwaves, as he boldly declares to the show’s host (with the help of a live interpreter) that he is British, a Muslim and has his own house and teeth (how’s that for an eligible bachelor?)
When he asserts that he is looking for a modern lady, the interpreter intervenes, by announcing that “We…” (presumably Turkey) “… are all modern – the world can’t match us on that.”
Modern, Turkey may well be, and certainly covers a a gama of beliefs and practices, particularly when it comes to dating codes. This is hardly surprising given that the predominantly Muslim, yet multicultural nation is bordered by eight countries and represents a sort of crossroads, neatly sandwiched between Africa, Asia and Europe.
The Language of Love Needs Little Translation
As the show progresses, it becomes apparent that Adil’s lack of Turkish and his gorgeous, model-like prospective sweetheart’s limitations in English may prove somewhat of a hurdle. They quickly bound over it with sign language and smiles.
Laugh out loud as our intrepid reporter blushes when she asks a pertinent question by making crocodile gesture with her fingers. (I’ll leave interpretation of that to your imaginations!)
This video clip is great value for a giggle and deserves big thumbs up to Adil for being such a good sport and many kudos to Su Gibi for bringing Muslims of all shades and hues together in the name of love and laughter.
