Yaser Birjas… A Palestinian International Muslim Marriage Expert

by Anisa Benmoktar on September 11, 2009

Yaser Birjas a.k.a ‘Shaykh Yaser Birjas’ is a Palestinian Muslim lecturer and teacher who was born in Kuwait and emigrated to the USA in 2000. Presently based in El Paso, Texas, Yaser is best known for his articles on Muslim marriage in the West. This remarkable Palestinian man has lived in the UAE, Jordan, and Bosnia and made a valuable contribution to Islamic education every step of the way.

He is currently VP for EmanRush Press, the publishing wing of the AlMaghrib Institute, and a frequent guest speaker Islamic conferences and conventions in the USA. Yaser is also a founding member of Practimate, a programme dedicated to pre-marital training and matching for Muslim singles living in the West.

Love, Life and The Universe

You gotta love technology for uniting people: I stumbled across Yaser Birjas via YouTube, where I found his hour long lecture on Muslim Marriage in America.  The first thing that struck me was how knowledgeable and yet personable he is. I mean, we’re clearly dealing with a man that has studied Islam in minute detail and more specifically, the finer details of Muslim marriage.

A Kuwaiti-born Palestinian who self propelled to The UAE, Jordan and Bosnia in the name of learning, Yaser emigrated to the US in 2000 and presently lives in El Paso, Texas with his wife and three children. The frankness, conviction and warmth with which he speaks are tell tale signs of a man who’s lived through the highs and lows of Muslim love and marriage as well as reading about them.

One Muslim Man Can Make the World of Difference

His mother tongue is Arabic, although he is also fluent in Bosnian and Serbo-Croatian which he learnt in Bosnia, and English which he taught himself in the USA, using a digital dictionary. This is pretty hard to believe given the clarity of his speeches during his US seminars on Muslim love and marriage, which have become extremely popular.

Whilst his beliefs are traditional, Yaser Birjas has embraced new technologies and unraveled the intricacies of modern life and love within and surrounding Islam, which he conveys in his lectures and in many of his articles (and on his Facebook page!)

This impressive Palestinian yet International citizen has worked his way from the inner realms of Islam out to the furthest reaches and somehow managed to embrace and encapsulate the true essence of what it is to be a young Muslim contemplating marriage in a modern and often hostile world.

A Strong Speaker and a Friendly Listener

Until 2007, Yaser was Imam at The Islamic Center in El Paso, where he played a key role in nurturing the town’s growing Muslim community, particularly in the post-9/11 era, when he spearheaded many initiatives to build bridges with other communities.

Today, he regularly contributes articles to Muslim Matters and The Marriage Revolution, and also counsels Muslims on a wide range of issues, especially marriage.

He is a founding member and supervisor of Practimate, a program aimed at pre-marital training and matching for Muslim singles living in the West.

There’s more to marriage than just falling in love…marriage is a mutual effort between a husband and a wife and both parties are responsible for making it happen in order to live happily ever after – it’s not going to happen by itself.” – Yaser Birjas: Top Ten Marriage Myths
